Renting an exotic car for the first time is one of the most genuinely exciting experiences you can give yourself. The anticipation, the moment the car appears, the first time you hear the engine — all of it is extraordinary. But going in without any preparation can turn excitement into anxiety very quickly. After 12 years of walking first-time renters through the experience here in Orange County, here is everything our family team wishes everyone knew before their first rental.
1. Understand Your Insurance Before You Book
This is the single most important step and the one most people skip. Call your personal auto insurance agent before you book your rental and ask specifically whether your policy extends coverage to high-value rental vehicles. Most comprehensive personal auto policies do cover rental cars, but coverage limits and exclusions vary significantly. Ask specifically:
- Does my policy cover vehicles above a certain value (e.g., over $100,000)?
- What is my deductible on a rental vehicle claim?
- Does my policy cover diminished value if the car is damaged?
- Does my credit card offer any supplemental rental coverage, and does it apply to exotics?
Making this one phone call before you book will save you significant cost and give you complete peace of mind for your rental day. Our team is always happy to discuss your coverage situation when you contact us.
2. Give Yourself More Time Than You Think You Need
Picking up an exotic for the first time is nothing like picking up a Camry at the airport. We walk you through every feature of the car — the drive modes, the paddle shifters, how the parking sensors work, where the fuel door release is, what the warning lights mean — and we make sure you feel genuinely comfortable before you leave. Budget 30–45 extra minutes for this process. It is time well spent, and our team enjoys it as much as you do.
Similarly, allow more time on the road than you think you need. First-time renters almost universally say the same thing: “I wish I had booked one more day.” If you think you want one day, book two. The experience compounds — you spend the first few hours just acclimating, and the second day is where the real enjoyment happens.
3. Start Slow — Seriously
A Lamborghini or Ferrari has more power than most people have ever experienced behind a wheel. The first 30 minutes of your rental should be entirely about getting comfortable, not about pushing any limits. The throttle response of a naturally aspirated V10 or twin-turbocharged V8 is unlike anything you have driven, and it deserves to be discovered gradually.
Get used to the brake pedal feel (exotic brakes are enormously powerful and very sensitive). Adjust to the steering weight and communication. Understand the rev range before you use it. These cars reward smooth, deliberate inputs far more than aggressive ones — the driver who learns the car in the first 30 minutes will have a dramatically better experience than the one who pushes immediately.
4. Understand the Drive Modes
Every modern exotic has multiple drive modes — typically ranging from a comfortable touring mode to a sport or performance mode to a full-track mode. For a street rental, our strong recommendation is to start in the most comfortable mode available. In a Lamborghini, that means Strada mode. In most Ferraris, it means Comfort or Sport (not Race). In McLaren, Normal mode first.
The more aggressive modes increase throttle sensitivity, stiffen the suspension, and sharpen every input — which is spectacular on a track but less intuitive on public roads, especially for a first-time driver. Our team will walk you through the modes at delivery and recommend the right one for your planned drive.
5. Park Strategically — Every Single Time
Exotic cars are wide, low, and extremely difficult to judge spatially if you are not used to them. Avoid tight multi-level parking structures whenever possible. Wide open surface lots with plenty of maneuvering room are your best friend. If you are heading somewhere with only structure parking, ask our team in advance — we know the parking situation at virtually every major destination in Orange County and Los Angeles, and we will steer you toward the easiest options.
When parking, always choose an end space if available. Park away from other vehicles if the lot is sparse. Do not try to squeeze into a space you are not certain about — back out and find a better option. The few extra minutes are always worth it.
6. What to Inspect at Delivery
- Walk the entire car with our team and personally confirm any pre-existing marks are noted on the condition report
- Confirm the fuel type required — most exotics require 91+ octane premium, some require higher
- Locate the fuel door release before you need it at a gas station
- Understand the parking brake location and operation
- Know which drive modes exist and what each one does
- Save our team’s contact number in your phone before driving away
- Check that the trunk (frunk) latch operation is clear
7. Fuel — Do Not Get This Wrong
Using the wrong fuel in an exotic can cause engine damage. Use only the fuel grade specified in the rental agreement — in most cases this is 91 octane or higher. Do not use regular. Do not use E85. When in doubt, call our team before fueling rather than after. Return the vehicle with a full tank of the correct grade and you will have zero issues. Our team fills the tank completely before delivery, and we ask that you return it the same way.
8. Enjoy Every Moment — Ali’s Advice
After 12 years, this is the piece of advice our founder Ali gives to every first-time renter: slow down and be fully present in the experience. Notice the sound of the engine at idle. Feel the steering in your hands. Watch how other drivers and pedestrians react. Listen to the exhaust note when you downshift. These are engineering achievements that took decades of motorsport development to reach road cars. They deserve to be appreciated fully, not just driven fast.
The best first-time renters are not the ones who drive the hardest — they are the ones who are most present. That awareness is what transforms a car rental into a memory that stays with you for years and turns first-timers into repeat clients.

Frequently Asked Questions for First-Timers
Do I need a special license?
No. A standard valid U.S. driver’s license is all that is required. You must be 25 or older to rent with First Class Exotics. International licenses are accepted with a valid passport.
Can I take the car on the freeway?
Yes, absolutely. Many of our clients enjoy freeway sections as part of their drive. Just be aware of the extreme acceleration available and maintain awareness of surrounding traffic.
What if something goes wrong during my rental?
Our team is reachable by phone throughout your entire rental. For mechanical issues, we arrange assistance or a replacement vehicle. For accidents, we walk you through the exact steps to take. You are never alone in the process.
